Alfa Romeo Giulietta Multiair Turbo 1.4 2010 - No compression on cylinder 1 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2010
Engine Size and Code *: 1368
( Optional ) ECU Type: Magneti Marelli
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0243

No compression on cylinder 1, valves, pistons removed checked and rebuilt.

Multiair system as I read/see it is four individual solenoids controlling the inlet valves via hydraulic oil pressure from the actuator block sitting on top of the inlet valves the pressure is built up from four individual pumps working off the camshaft, their is no direct contact from the cam to the inlet valves.

I have scoped the solenoid valves using amps clamps and found all signals the same ie zero to a peak of 11-12amps dropping to a steady 5amps for a short while (square waveform) then back to zero. Sorry couldn't post capture on this computer.

So from the above and a slight knocking from the top end i can only presume the failure is in the inlet valve actuator block nothing is sold separate (£667.00) any suggestions or experience of this fault ? Customer is seeking financial help from the dealer as it has only done 39000 miles, so may loose the job but very interesting as new technology comes in.

With the customers ok we will take the actuator block off and have a look inside and keep you posted

Hi Martin

The Multiair system was discussed at the Top Tech at Fiat Unetversity

On top of the actuator block is a allen key/screw that has to be removed and filled with oil to prime the system before it will run correctly, not sure of it's exact location

The only oil that can be used is a C3 5w40, apparently a lot of the problems are caused by the incorrect oil spec or running low and topping up with the wrong spec

As you have also found out, there are no spare parts just a complete block, but has to be primed correctly

Thanks Peter, that make me wonder if its run low on oil and this is the result ?

Since the engine has been rebuilt it has had the correct oil fitted, what it had previously not sure, but has not had the actuator block primed.

Will take a closer look tomorrow, thanks for the info, the local Fiat agent never explained it had to be primed !!

Yes, we had our first experience of these efforts last year.

The one we had in had only covered 15,000 miles! After a bit of research and testing we found that many other engine re-conditioners in our area were also coming across inlet valve actuator faults on these particular models.

Part no. should be 0000055257643 £484.89+vat and you'll require gasket: 0000055222222 too.

Hi, we are changing a multi air unit,

Car was misfiring and had low compression , I stripped multiair unit and found threaded nut had worked loose , and stripped the thread, causing the valve to jack open.one other nut was also loose.

Just some advice, can someone tell me the priming proceedure?

As ive read they can be difficult to start after replacing.

Hi checked for plug to prime the system,
nothing obvious, only a possible pressure relief valve.

Registered for fiat dealer portal , and had 2 separate hours to access the information , kept coming up with subscription invalid.
Site is very difficult to navigate and certainly not user friendly

Spoke to dealer and not helpful and no technical hotline to call.

Hopefully more luck tomorrow

Just an update

I spoke to local independent fiat/alfa specialist, he said the earlier units needed priming,but the new units are primed with oil.
If you do need to prime one, you can slowly fill them up with a small funnel via the oil filler cap into a relief valve.

StIll takes lots of cranking.

FIXED Customer complained to Alfa and took it to them who under goodwill replaced the actuator assembly who still charged a reduced fee !
