Renault Clio 1.4 K4J 2000 - Misfire and backfire - Unresolved #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 k4j
( Optional ) Scanner Used: ss2 maxisys opus
( Optional) Fault Codes: no fault code

hi everyone i have got this in for the day trying to find out why it's misfiring and backfiring. i have scanned it and no codes the engine idles smoothly and picks up revs well in the workshop if i do it slowly, but if i snap it it misfires and backfires so far i have smoked it, scoped the coils, the crank sensor, oxygen sensor, replace the spark plugs it's still the same i have checked the emmisions and they look good i wanted to check the timing but there is no easy way to do this without destroying the cups there does't seem to be a cam sensor to compare it with the crank sensor. any ideas?

thanks andrew i will check tomorrow also the customer told me today that there is a lot of black smoke when the engine is cold which i did't see as the engine was hot when it came in so i will also check the water temperature sensor in the morning

Hi George, have a look at the plastic fuel pipes that are clipped to the back of the cylinder head. Seen them kinked which causes exact fault you have

i have spend a couple of hours today i disconnected the exhaust just in case it was blocked but no difference starting it from cold today it was running really bad and smoking once i managed to steady the revs at 2200 rpm for a while and looked under the car the cat was red hot so i left it and told my customer that it looks like the timing is out but he was't prepared to spend any more money on it so the car goes unresolved. thanks for your comments

i had the same issue with this on a number of clios, it can either be 1 of 3 things:-
1.the injection computer required re-programming, 2.throttle body adaption or
3.the more common issue of the engine wiring loom.
