Peugeot 206 1.1 2003 - Cuts out for no reason, code P0215 fuel pump relay #

Posted by Dominic Casey on November 2, 2018, 7:56 pm

Year of Manufacture: 2003
Engine Size and Code: 1.1
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Solus Ultra
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0215

Hi,can anyone shed any light on this problem.Car cuts out for no reason, and the above fault code P0215 fuel pump relay circuit is present. The fuel pump relay and the fuel cut off switch are built into the fuse box in engine compartment,so I replaced it.I wired up the fuel pump from an external source and it will fill a 5 ltr can in about 40 sec.The fuse box I fitted was a second hand unit,I actually tried 2 just in case but still the same. All connections are good and there's battery voltage at the pump when running. This problem can occur after a mile or so of driving,or it can happen straight away there is no set pattern, and the above fault code comes back straight away.Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance Dominic Casey

You say "All connections are good and there's battery voltage at the pump when running."

Is there battery voltage there when it stops running?

I seem to remember these from old. The wire that fires up the fuel pump relay ,from the fuse box to the engine ecu, goes open circuit in the engine wiring harness. Best fix is to overlay another wire connecting the two parts.

Hi Graham,

when the car cuts out or doesn't start, there is no power at the pump. Also in this case there is no power at the fuse box to power the relay either. Also tried the aerial ring around the ignition switch in case it was an immobiliser problem, but the car starts with that even disconnected.
Your help is much appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Hi
I agree with Andrew control wire from ECU to relay is prone to failing, load and wiggle test it at least.

Regards your comment when it fails there is no power at the relay, are you saying that 1 or both of the 12v + feeds to relay drops out ?

Remember the ecu will control the relay by earthing the coil.

Hi Aidan,

managed to identify, using the wiring diagram, the wire that the ECU earths for the fuel pump relay and the earth drops out at the ECU end of the wire when the car cuts out. Wondering is it an ECU problem or something else that tells the ECU to stop the fuel?

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

Dominic

Hi

>>>>>>>>Wondering is it an ECU problem or something else that tells the ECU to stop the fuel?<<<<<<<

That's a chicken & egg question as the fuel pump control would drop out immediately if the engine cuts out for any reason. (safety in case of accident).

A scope probably be only thing that would show if its cause or effect.

have you load tested the wiring ?

Aidan

Hi Aidan,

that's fair enough actually, you are right with chicken and egg, but when the car doesn't start there is no earth for the fuel pump relay from ECU as well, not just when it cuts out.
I wonder what exactly would you be testing with a scope to tell if it is a cause or an effect? I don't think a scope would show much more on this earth wire, so I wonder what you have in mind that you would test?

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

Dominic

Hi Dominic
>>but when the car doesn't start there is no earth for the fuel pump relay from ECU as well, not just when it cuts out. <<<

Should be easier to test when in crank/ no start mode, you say the ecu is not pulling relay to earth, is that tested at relay or ECU ?

On non start/ crank, do injectors pulse & coil fire ?

Have you checked ECU connectors for corrosion/ damp and tension ?

Hi Dominic,
There are at least 3 different variations of systems relating to a 1.1 2003 206 !
Bosch, Valeo & Magnetti Marelli - so if I wanted to look up a wiring diagram which one should I select ?
A reg or chassis number would help in your initial post - you might find more people help !

Don't take this as a telling off, more a helpful reminder for everyone to post as much info as possible at the beginning.
