In the pre-industrial world, the round trip between China and America was around 8,000 miles and involved following the Asian coast north to Siberia, across the Bering Strait to Alaska, down the west coast of America, and then returning across the equatorial Pacific.
Not sure where he has pulled this out of, sounds bit dubious .. Bering Straights : /. It is well known that the Chinese have travelled to Africa, via 'normal' Southern route. I forget the exact period and just before they decided not to bother and burned their ships, so to speak. Africa being a 'short hop' away from Americas.
