Someone told me once that the British people supported the Falklands War (Foot was against the Argentine Junta, remember) because 250,000 people saw off the armada from Plymouth Hoe but that was the year that 250,000 people circled Greenham Common so take your pick. Like it or not the (modest) Tory poll revival began before the Junta occupied the islands. Of course the defection of the Gang of Four divided the anti-Tory vote but then opinion polls since forever show that the British public favour what David Edgerton called the social-democratic state and society of the 1970s. That's why Liarbour has always colluded with the Tories to protect the state and undermine Liarbour's 'achievements'.
