On parliamentary abstentions where known numbers create a different story, Frank Maguires infamous one in the vote of no confidence 1979 did have some effect as It brought down Callaghan & Labour. It has been explained variously as deliberately political, being unavailable because he was locked in a toilet, being rat-arsed on whiskey or being told to do so by his wife: the jurists of history are still working out the real "meaning" of his "behaviour" 40 odd years later.
