Just to add, the blame game is already swirling around the internet. It may well turn out the captain / crew were not just lackadaisical as you put it, but negligent, but as I say, let's give the pros a chance to tell us, in fairness. I wonder how many other vessels had their portholes and hatches open in the heat of Sicily at the time, quite a few I'd imagine. Apparently the mast did break, without sails on it, so we probably do know of one possible structural shortcoming. Just saying........
