You have to read to near the end of the article, about 750 words, to be informed that the Maccabi supporters had been themselves seriously acting up, shouting anti-Palestinian threats, burning a Palestinian flag and behaving in a racist and bothersome fashion like any other normal touring football fans, along with ignoring a minute's silence for the victims of the Spanish floods.
What I understand is that this was an Israeli soccer team, it was described as such repeatedly, and it was Israelis that were involved in fights and violence. Were they Jews? Probably. But, was it a "Jewish soccer team"?, No, it wasn't. But that is actually irrelevant, and again, this dangerous and deliberate and cynical conflation of Israeli citizenship with Jewishness, the conflation of righteous anger against Israeli people and their government, and their own deep and pathological and fascistic racism, with anti-Semitism. Israel, the country, the people, sadly have brought the meaning of anti-Semitism to a hypocrisy, .
I abhor the sort of violence that we see here, but if I had my way, no Israeli sports team or sporting representative would be allowed to compete in any country that I had some say in. . And there'd be no violence or contention to worry about.
