This wasn't a peculiarly Scottish phenomenon and indeed Puritanism itself was a distinctly English movement.

This whole censorial thing comes from a diametrically opposite source somwhat eschewed by religious traditionalists. It's as Sue points to above, a symptom of modern & specifically middle-class top down Idpol "feminism" & effectively an import from the US Democratic party who adopted the whole "woke" cult to avoid dealing with the elephant in the room: the real division in society caused by wealth inequality.

It's much easier to deal with a fractured rabble of competing victimhoods than actually take on the wealthy...whom as a politician you likely belong to anywise.
So...create & utilise a whole new vocabulary of gender pronouns & a Heinz 57 variety smorgasbord of identity groupings...build a cross pollinating hierarchy of the ostensibly neglected virtuous ('Intersectionality") and then move the whole subjective crock into political parties, the workplace and the semi-legal sphere creating "quotas" and "positive discrimination". Encourage a culture of subjectivity where "hurt feelings" and making someone feel "uncomfortable" for not observing the new reality a la mode are "crimes" and where the punishment can be as severe as to lose your job or livelihood..thus of course conveniently creating new space more identity grifters... Meanwhile the use of the pronoun jargon etc enforces a new etiquette which, like the old strangely enough, also serves to discriminate against the working classes whom unfortunately for themselves oft adhere to a more traditional objective reality.

-That's how you structuraly engineer incompetence into society & reinforce class boundaries...whilst doing nothing at all about real inequality: and all in the name of "inclusion" and that vague idol called "progress".
