I always remember a few of my dad's friends telling me a story of when they were arrested at a demonstration in Corby when the Steel Works there was being shut down by Thatcher's butcher, the unelected Ian MacGregor, an appointee of Keith Joseph, the Mad Monk!
Anyway, before getting caged, they all had to take their shoes, belts etc off and these items were lined up in the corridor when my dad made the quip that whoever got out first in the morning got the best shoes.
Apparently that didn't go down well with the filth and the cup of tea they had been promised was cancelled and the thin mattresses removed from the cells.
Always got a laugh out of that one!
