'he was so clearly emotionally affected and it had me tearing up a bit' - me too, but then that felt more like empathy for him than anyone else! Or the typical man response of needing somebody else to express vulnerability first before you can admit to yourself that it's ok & do the same... Probably a useful thing to do at times like this, to not add to the divisive tensions and remind ppl of shared humanity. But yeah, that's maybe more appropriate for the innocents caught up in the situation, like his kids, than for Kirk himself. I didn't know much about him before, but righteous anger like this seems justified in its own way:
