The Goodies always struck me as the dregs left over from Cambridge Footlights who were propelled purely on the momentum of natural oxbridge entitlement, as the Cambridge footlights background faded into the reality of just not being very intrinsically funny, especially when played at normal speed.
Some people, e.g. Peter Cook, Spike Milligan and Ronnie Barker just had funny bones. Intrinsically. Milligan was treated like total shit, leading to three nervous breakdowns. A genius.
Bill Oddie was a very nice guy though, the wikipedia page describes his mental depression and green party membership (no connection between the two :-)
