He's a chump...a halfwit. Why would anyone give him a job that supposedly involves serious commentary when he's so obviously incapable of any reflective thought whatsoever?

I suppose the answer is that he's a bit of a bargain: a sort of one man Overton window whose job is to encourage the kind of circular stupidity that can only be resolved by indulging in his fantasy world view.
