Well, there's no shortage of tribal place named ethno deities in imperial societies. Athena for one - Minerva later personified as Roma...who's martial image was directly copied to give us the armoured warlike "Britannia" whom we used to have on our most Imperial coinage. I mentioned Tuatates merely because it contains the very root we see in "Tutelary" deity: the god of "the people"...the issue being exclusivity: the "We are the people"...of the football chant...you, unfortunately for you, are not.
Judaism espoused monotheism and the Christians and Muslims readily responded. Unfortunately, Judaic monotheism forgot to include actually belonging to "the people" in the franchise: it's ethno exclusive. You can never be "the people": you're the "other". That exclusive mindset is by it's very nature supremacist and as the Palestinians know well to their cost, people of that mindset unfortunately aren't going to "...leave you the fuck alone."
