Finding a link between Assange, Trump and the Russians, is the holy grail for rightwing journalists. To make this connection plausibly stick together has enormous implications politically and professionally for an amhitious journalist, and Harding, in nothing else, is incredibly ambitious as this incredible story is also a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, if one can pull it off. So the Guardian and Harding have a common interests in proving the link, where the Mueller inquiry has so spectacularly failed. If true this story would be a journalistic sensation. Harding is an obssessive russophobe too, which coupled witht the rest, means he suffers from tunnel vision, the great problem of the fanatic, and he's so eager to grasp that ellusive 'grail' that he doesn't care about how he does it, even if he has to fabricate the story himself, because it's just outside his fingertips and he knows in his heart that it must be true. It has to be true. Once one passionately believes in witchcraft, finding the witches is the easy part. That one of the greatest journalistic scandals of recent years, Harding's fabricated story, can pass virtually without comment in the rest of the media, really does show how fanatical, cult-like and degenerate journalism has become. Sick, ghastly and tainted. That the Guardian's editor Viner is running scared and refuses to acknowledge this scandal, is a digrace and she should resign, or sack Harding, that's the only honourable course. She has a direct responsibility for allowing this muck written by Harding to be published without checking the facts first. But in reality she's not the editor of the Guardian. Freedland and Harding are.
