The mere mention of Thatcher still manages to start my blood boiling! "I don't condemn cryptos. I just don't buy the balmy, rather unrealistic enthusiasm about them that the techno-eega-beevas display. The Long Descent is going to offer them a certain amount of harsh education about the realities of their unsustainable hitech-industrial-progressforever world, I suspect. I think you're wise to hold your savings in more than one basket. Stick with that! The best basket of all is - eternally-useful skills and the tools to enable them; and a local community that respects you personally, and values your contributive membership..." We're pretty much in agreement there. As regards gold (and silver too), I plan to sell both when/if the value of both goes up significantlty. It's already becoming more difficult to transport PMs and cash over international borders, so therefore it could be the case that crypto becomes the preferred store of value in the medium future, in that it can be transferred to any location quickly, cheaply and privately. Of course, there is always the threat of unreliable power supplies that could interfere with these electronic transfers. However, the power is unlikely to be off everywhere permenantly, so anyone holding crypto in personal wallets, such as Trezors or Nanos, just needs to wait, or travel in order to transfer funds. Either that, or call on the community geek who can set up access to a mesh network. In any Long Descent scenario, just as with learning other established skills to aid self-reliance such as mechanics, building, plumbing etc, I reckon competence in improvised communications and their application to digital currency will offer a handy alternative to any future government who might wish to "control access" to our personal funds. Btw, I expect you've listened to the latest KunstlerCast with John Michael Greer. A fascinating conversation I thought. Gave me a boost of hope.
