What's the purpose of this essay by Chris Mullin? Archived Message

The full horror of that night in Birmingham has been largely forgotten. I should declare an interest here; I knew both of the Birmingham pubs bombed that night - one was known as a hang-out for young people. Look at a list of those who died and note how young many of them were. The uncle of one of my friends was one of the first of the emergency responders on the scene and he has never really recovered from what he saw that night. A young A&E doctor who'd been with the peace corps in Vietnam said many of the inures they dealt with were worse than he'd seen over there. Many years later, I met a plastic surgeon who treated many IRA bombing victims - he and his team had to devise solutions to the kind of injuries that were not in the text books.

The toll on those who survived that night was horrific - suicides, alcoholism, drug abuse, broken relationships. And for over 40 years the bereaved and injured have had to live with the knowledge that no-one guilty of mass murder was ever held accountable. So I tend to think that Mr Mullin is honourable in the way of Brutus.
