'Nature needs the people it needs, it just doesn't need humans who are estranged from the natural environment (most westerners I guess!)' - indeed Derek, well put. The Diego Garcia example is illustrative. I read the wikileaks revelation that the UK and US govt were clear about this being a ruse to deny a right to return for the Chagossians, or 'Man Fridays' as they're +still+ being referred to: https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/09LONDON1156_a.html What I didn't realise is that it was also a conscious ploy to drive a wedge between environmental campaigners and human rights activists, using the former against the latter because 'the UK's environmental lobby is far more powerful than the Chagossians' advocates.' Clearly the most important task ahead of us is to connect the interests of people to those of healthy ecosystems, but thanks to agriculture we've had 10,000 years of Us vs Them which is not going to be overturned easily... Either way it seems clear that the ecological health of the Chagos islands will be better served by sensitive human habitation than by a f*ing US military base! Hopefully environmentalists can see that and avoid being used as a pawn in colonialist atrocities. cheers, I
