Meanwhile, in the UK, one wastes almost three years twittering away about something as fundamentally irrelvant as Brexit. Compare the space given to Brexit and the climate catastrophe that's unfolding, and weep.

If huge swathes of the public are so uninformed and poorly educated that they falsely believe that the EU is to blame for all their problems, what hope is there that suddenly people in sufficient numbers will wake up and understand the complexities and challenges we face as the climate collapses?

How, given our degenerate political culture and the structure of our media and the low quality of public debate, are people going to learn about the dangers we face, before it's too late? Once it's impossible to ignore what's happening, as the heat really starts kicking in, it'll be too late to avoid what amounts to disaster.

Ideally, I'd like to see the establishment of a form of people's dictatorship, where society was put on a 'wartime' footing and severe rationing was introducedf or everyone, coupled with a forced structural redistribution of wealth, coupled with a substantial reduction in material living standards for all. Of course this would mean the virtual end of the 'free market' and captialism. Probably the banking system would collapse as the faith that all our debts would be paid back would vanish. All of this would most likely knock the bottom out of the global economy and capital would almost disappear along with growth and progress.
