One of the reasons, among many, I'm not a fan of Brexit and referendums, is the dangers inherent of encouraging unecessary schisms in politics and society, which can have terrible consequences going forward as powers are released that shouldn't be.

I've been reading a lot about the period before, during and after the English Civil War, and I think there are striking similarities between those decades of danger and our own time.

The language is different, it's soaked in the prose of the various religious factions, groups, societies and cults, but the passions raised and released are not. There really was no 'left' or 'right', but a schism between the 'Godly' and 'un-Godly.' There was probably more 'democracy' and public debate then, than at any time in British history, until the 1960's. The 'centre' or state was, as it is now, in meltdown, which created space for ideas and voices outside centralised power, personified by the King, Charles the First.

Given the kind of society we live in and where it's going, I'm really concerned about the passions and feelings Brexit has brought to the surface. Looked at from a European perspective the UK looks like it's gone mad, is ridden with strife, paralyesed, dogmatic, deranged and detached from reality, without central leadership, basic comptetence and in meltdown at the centre.

To do this willingly, stuns people in Europe, who are watching events in the UK with mixture of fascination and stunned disbelief. Current events undermine almost everything people thought they knew about the British, because it's been so successfully hidden for so long, by the elites stranglehold on power and their abilit to control the national narrative.

One German said to me, this isn't a divorce, rathrer one part has decided to commit suicide. Now, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it is how it looks from Europe.
