I think I see your point, but am not sure I agree. Because Israeli confiscation of the Golan Heights is an illegal annexation, anyone writing about US support for it - more accurately, US participation in it - naturally reaches for examples of annexations the US has denounced as illegal and sought to punish by way of contrast. Sure, hypocrisy is a permanent feature of US foreign policy, but that doesn't mean one doesn't try to constantly expose the most glaring contradictions between its actions and its rhetoric. Golan vs Crimea is one such example, particularly for the reasons you mention: the latter can be defended on principles of law, peace and democracy, whereas the former can't appeal to any of those. All the more reason to make the comparison.
