I don't believe it's ever been anything but a drive to give the uk more freedom within the realm of the eu. The elite have always wanted their cake and to eat, the U.K. Had plenty of exceptional caveat within the eu, and it sufficiently wealthy as a unit (rather than the individuals) to be a serious issue re leaving with the eu itself. I would say the gamble ran thus; vote to stay and the charade continues, not amazing news for the richest but they're still getting the best of both worlds. Vote to leave, heels dragged for (?) years, deals brokered that wouldn't be accepted (haggling), eventually it is decided that remaining with more caveats for the uk (read rich) is only option, eu accepts, and nothing but more corrupt deals within the framework has taken place. That's not Tory/ukip but the whole damn sorry lot- labour are as big business motivated as the rest, but there's the good cop bad cop routine in place here. Eu I don't see as saviours any more than a labour govt here might be; it strikes me as an economic front to a military arm, mostly economic but placing Europe as a potential superpower alongside China, Russia, the us, where no country within would be on their own. the reason I liked it when the vote was in favour of leaving is that it meant the lazy buggers in Parliament might have to do some work for their big salaries. I obviously didn't see the eventualities arising I described above then, but I also probably would still support same outcome. Anyone thinking positive change might someday come from sitting on their hands has lost all hope in everything. I imagine that was a motivator for a fair share of uk voters, and I reject the dodgy polls that pin it all on bigotry, because I'm not bigot and I dislike the eu as much as I do the uk govt. in fact, I like Europeans, even the Greeks who the eu had no problem squashing.
