Over the last few years the British courts have shown a distinct reluctance to extradite UK citizens to the United States, for example for hacking offences that weren't crimes in the UK. Of course Assange isn't a UK citizen, but he is here none-the-less. The UK courts guard their perogatives and status closely. Reputation is everything in the legal business, so rolling over for the Americans too obviously can be extremely damaging. Anyway one doesn't know what, if anything, the Americans will charge Assange with. Espionage? Treason? Does he risk the death penalty? The UK courts won't had him over, if he risks the death pæenalty. So the Americans have to be careful about how they proceed. The UK can't act like a banana republic or a vassal state.
