Not only do we have fake news from 'respectable' MSM sources, we now have fake science from 'respectable' educational institutions.

But seriously, although it is excellent news that the perpetrators have been fingered, it seems, we have little in a way of details. For example, were these scientific papers being used just to get the funding pure and simple, or are there wider implications? If we were told specifically which papers, the subject/s, or at least the titles of these papers, some names etc., we could get a clue.

Perhaps as a side issue, this is a part of a wider concern about the vested interests in the research.

I haven't time or energy to dig deeper into this subject. Meanwhile I had a look at the Chronicle mag linked to the article:

... Much of Potti's research, which focused on analyzing a patient’s genes to predict the effectiveness of cancer drugs, was shown to be falsified. For example, in one grant application, he stated that nine out of 33 patients in a trial responded beneficially to a cancer drug, yet there were only four people in the trial, and none of them responded to the drug. Nine of Potti’s papers have been retracted since the allegations of misconduct surfaced.

As a penalty, the ORI mandated that Potti be supervised for any NIH-funded research he conducted for the next five years. Potti, who resigned in 2010, currently practices medicine at the Cancer Center of North Dakota in Grand Forks, according to the center's website.

So, some details may be available, but not in this original article. I guess it's possible, if one digs deeper, one can find the meaning and wider implication of this event apart from the fact that one needs to be very careful about the science being churned out of these institutions.

    Cheers
