Some interesting thoughts there shakyu. U.K. Isn't a Andy producer of food, energy, building materials or very much at all. It has relied for a very long time on world dominance and the money to buy its way, which is, I think, the economic fear some people have about any change to the status quo.

There is no chance of positive environmental shifts in earnest (like reforestation, agricultural rethink) without a change to the status quo. Nor anything else, like a redress to the collosal wealth of a very tiny minority.

But, as you point out, there isn't the background in Brits of any influence (as opposed to poor immigrants, inc myself) of having to start again with nothing and build from there. It isn't easy (I've done it maybe 5 times in my adult life, completely, many more times on a smaller scale). But it isn't life ending either and can prompt positive changes in terms of organisation, tech and env outlook and knowledge, smaller Eco footprint (look at Cuba for country sized examples).

U.K. Has been living outside its means for a long time. Austerity makes us think of its this bad now how much worse will it get if that artificial boost from the dealings of the wealthy is removed, but we need to remember that austerity is imposed by the exact same scoundrels. With organisation and the right international relationships (a friendlier one with Russia would be a great start), U.K. Could do ok till it got itself on a more locally sustainable path and did away with all the rich leeches.

Hard to countenance for many because economic fear of the unknown trumps all else.
