When this whole Assange Affair started I used to feel I was young. Now, I feel old. Knowing Sweden rather well, I'm pretty sure the Swedish security services were involved in this affair from close to the beginning, certainly from the day Ekspressen published the frontpage article about Assange being wanted for rape. Seemingly the security services of all western countries were already on a 'hair trigger' in relation to Assange, instigated by the United States that let it be known that Assange was a target and considered an enemy of the West for his activities, mostly his unwillingness, compared to the rest of the West's media, to cover-up military and state crimes. The Swedish security services have a long history of targetting leftists, often in close co-opperation with the UK and the US. This goes back decades. I tried to explain to the Guardian that the Swedish tabloid - Ekspressen, was an unholy mix of the Sun and the Dail Mail, therefore one should take everything they had to say with a pinced of salt, at the very least. This was after they had published a background article, early on, written by a journalist working for Eskpressen. I found it odd, and told them so, that the Guardian was relying on such a rightwing source as an authority on the Assange Affair. That comment led to my first banishment from the Guardian's CIF corral. It really is both shocking and disgraceful how poorly the Guardian has covered these events in Sweden. Exaggeratiing, distorting, lying, twisting, smearing, liballing, betraying trust... the list is endless. I don't know why anyone with any honour would want to work or be associated with such a publicatio.
