I suppose its the consequence of the celebrity culture of the west: this need to encapsulate an entire war, country, political philosophy etc in one "famous" person: as a corollary demonising or discrediting that one person is an easier task than discrediting an entire nation philosophy or idea: discredit Assad, discredit Assange...discredit Thunberg = discrediting by proxy all they stand for. - that's the actual game anyway whatever the facts are on the individual.
