The problem for liberals and the soft-left opperating within the increasingly constricted boundaries of our 'free' media, is that if they did suddenly become real journalists again in Assange Affair, they'ed quickly find themselves at odds with the official narrative which is supported by an awful lot of very power actors in society, not least our masters in Washington. Journalists and Judges are loathe to do this, they know what's expected of them and provide interpretations of the Law which don't bring them into conflict with powerful forces and the politicians. The very idea that Judges are robustly independent of politics, is a quaint myth. Journalists cannot honestly report what's happening to Assange because to do so would be to open up a vile can of worms about the real character of our democracy and how we deal with critics and dissidents who challenge the rules of power in society.
