I'm sure this is just a coincidence... Archived Message

but the timing is rather strange all the same. On the face of it, a puff piece for a book that was published in 2017 (hence the odd timing), the article is essentially a list of jewish footballers that were murdered by the nazis in the Holocaust. The sub head is: While Bert Trautmann became a household name in England despite previous Nazi links, the names of the Jewish players murdered in the death camps remain largely forgotten The first paragraph's icy sarcasm betrays the "never forgive" mindset of the writer: It is interesting what people choose to remember. A recent film celebrates Bert Trautmann, a member of the Hitler Youth who later became a goalkeeping legend in England. Trautmann apparently regretted his former antisemitism and did wonders for Anglo-German relations. How touching. I wonder how many people throughout Europe know the names of the Jewish international footballers who were gassed, worked to death, beaten to a pulp or shot into pits by the regime Trautmann fought for. I would wager that if you asked even the nerdiest of footie nerds to name some of the great Eastern European players of the 20s and 30s you would get very few responses, whether they were Jewish or not. Nowhere in the article is there any mention of anyone or thing that was not Jewish or Zionist: Max Scheuer was a stalwart of Hakoah Vienna, the most famous of the all-Jewish, Zionist football clubs. Ahh yes, the most famous of those famous all-Jewish, Zionist football clubs like er....hmmm I'll think of one in a moment. Oh yes, Beitar Jerusalem; infamous for being the most racist club in the world that's never signed an arab player and for having some of the most right-wing racist fans who hounded two muslim players the club signed out of the club with racist chants, death threats and attacks. Remember and commemorate these people by all means, preferably including footballers of other religious/political persuasions, but the timing of this being published does seem a little odd. https://www.dumptheguardian.com/football/blog/2019/may/06/remembering-the-cream-of-jewish-footballing-talent-killed-in-the-holocaust
