Sometimes i think we debate these things at cross purposes based on the vagueness of the concept of "civilization". I liked the point you made the other day that "there is a crossover point between stable economic size and not being in conflict with the full and sustainable richness of nature, but nobody really knows where that crossover point is, only that it is much less than where we are now". I agree with that and think it should induce humility and the adoption of the precautionary principle, since the fate of the planet's life systems hangs in the balance. But the problem as usual always comes back to systems of power and control. Within the constraints of the existing economic system/paradigm those who sit at the top of it will never have this debate, and the only precautionary principle they are capable of adopting - or even conceiving - is wrt preserving profits, market share, and continual growth and will take every precaution to ensure none of these are impeded. So again as always it comes back to grassroots political movements and whether they can replace this system with something else in time. I'm wondering if you could elucidate the idea that "The sustainable rate of production = the rate of decay". I can't quite wrap my head around it. Since production is directly connected to extraction, isn't the sustainable rate of extraction and species/ecosystem displacement/destruction a more critical factor?
