The outbreak of public snivelling that followed Diane Spencer’s death led to a stampede of celebrities heroically coming clean to a “bipolarity” that is to great wit near allied Dr Johnson’s own Depression was the real deal, a step away madness that terrified him. To Boswell he wrote "You are always complaining of melancholy and I conclude from those complaints that you are fond of it."
