A Peter Ustinov anecdote Archived Message

I well remember a Peter Ustinov documentary years ago set in St Petersburg in which he recalled a story about Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, in which Dostoevsky said: "Tolstoy affects mental instability and cultivates eccentric mannerisms in order to demonstrate to the world his 'artistic' temperament. Whereas I, who am truly distressed and suffering mental torture, seek desperately to present an exterior of calm and placidity and well-being; in other words 'normal' behaviour."
