It's really a indictement of our political culture, where conformity rules supreme and unchallenged, that even the country's intellectuals can turn away from the persecution of Julian Assange and pretend this isn't even happening, happening on our own doorstep, no in some far away land, off at a safe distance. It's like a noose has been slowly tightened around people's throats, with most of them not even undertanding what's really happening; until they try to open their mouths to speak, but no sound emerges. Although, these 'media bishops' don't even go that far, to make a feeble attempt at speaking the truth. For them, the 'noose' is inside their heads. The last forty years have slowly strangled democracy and free speech in the UK. Just look at John Pilger's career trajectory for one example. The use of the 'rape' label to destroy Assange, was a ghastly and so successful. For liberals the power of this mere allegation trumps the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innoncence. That Assange was never charged with any kind of sex offence, passes most people by. Most people think the Swedes have actually charged him with rape, and when one interjects that he hasn't been charged after so many years they look... dumbfounded.
