Whenever I hear the term 'alternative comedian' I'm always reminded of Alexei Sayle's line "I'm an alternative comedian, I'm not funny". While I don't find Jo Brand's 'battery acid' remark in the least bit funny, I think there's need for some perspective here. The violently inclined in our society don't need 'permission' from TV presenters to carry out acts of violence and they don't wait for it. For all kinds of reasons, our society is becoming increasingly fragmented and abandoning reason, rationality and proportion. One symptom of this is the growing incivility in political debate and the growing acceptance that some views are so beyond the pale that, really, those holding them should be physically punished. Let's be honest here - if someone did throw battery acid at one of these hate figures like Nigel Farage or Tommy Robinson, wouldn't at least some members of the Guardianista tribe be secretly pleased? Wouldn't they feel it was justified? This can't be laid at Jo Brand or any individual's door and although she's done her bit to contribute to a particular cultural movement, it is just a bit.
