To claim JA should not be extradited because he is at risk of the death penalty should include the penalty of prison until death. Still setting the bar way too low. Extradition should be opposed because western liberal democracies are supposed to be committed to things like human rights, the rule of law, free speech, etc and opposed to arbitrary political persecution that trample on these rights and principles. Even if Assange were facing a ten, or five or two year sentence, such penalties would be for the "crime" of journalism. If promises that he will not face capital punishment are a distraction, so are guarantees that he won't die in a US prison. The difference is just one of degrees. The principled and lawful position is no extradition for someone who has committed no identifiable crime and faces political persecution, in this case by a lawless state that does not, has not, and and cannot be expected uphold his legal or human rights.
