Life and Fate represents the definitive WW2 novel and is a 20th century masterpiece. I have purchased Stalingrad and am eager to get started. There is also a very worthwhile Russian TV serial adaptation of Life and Fate (Zhizn i Sudba), made in 2011. It is pretty powerful (although pales into comparison with the source novel) and well worth seeking out. It is available to watch on the Amazon Prime channel.
