T, with respect, it appears to me that you are quibbling about things that exist only in your fevered imagination. Twice in this thread I have asserted that I don't think we should 'abandon the ideals of strong character' (as you put it) - nor do I think CJ is suggesting that we 'abandon' such things. Hence, I don't understand why you are saying it for a third time - are you wilfully misconstruing me? Is my ability to explain something really so poor that you can't understand me? You pose 3 questions: 1. "We" never achieved strong moral character? No, I clearly said that I personally don't think that it was sufficiently achieved - it never came anywhere close to having a universal reach. I posited the notion that State Violence and State Control militates against such ideas gaining universal traction. 2. "We" and the state are one? Are you serious? In this thread alone it should be crystal clear that I resolutely distinguish between 'we' the people and the monstrous State. Again, have I really so roundly failed to make that distinction? Or is it more the case that you are just not fully engaging with that which I actually write? 3. Our culture is the enemy? I would ask that you unpack that, 'our culture' if you want a nuanced response from me - who is the 'our' - what do you mean by 'culture' - - you see, we can all play that game - it just means that we take twice as long to get where we'd like to be - or we never actually get there because we've overly quarrelled on the way and never achieved an accord. You have shown yourself to be fretful about 'radicalism'. I suggested, in sympathy with CJ, that a 'radical' solution is needed - - you then ratcheted it up to 'irrational radicalism' - - I'm really not sure how you've concluded that I, or CJ would advocate anything 'irrational' - the whole point is that we conjure up a practical and pragmatic solution - something that is attractive and graspable on a near universal level. It's a f*ck of a challenge, and a challenge made all the more difficult by nitpicking sods inside the tent pissing all over the good intentions of others.
