Storm blew over a mature willow tree and uprooted it so badly that it seemed like to die. A got a stick which had broken off and shoved it into a rain-puddle right next to one of our ponds here. Scant hope for it, but now, some weeks later, though the puddle has dried up, the stick is wrapped in vigorous new leaf growth, and obviously has its new roots down in the water table that sustains the ponds. A new member of a whole lot of willows planted there and now growing well. Immensely pleasing and reassuring when I see this - Peculiarly gratified by this particular rescue: "Which means the globe's still working/ Our Summer's still all to come..." (Ted Hughes)
