There are two reservoirs 'above' Whaley Bridge. Todbrook, the one with the dodgy dam, was built to feed the Peak Forest canal at a time when 80 barges full of stone/lime per day were going to Manc from Bugsworth. A few narrow boats per day now. We reckon it won't be reconstituted - no need. The other reservoir (Combs) can also feed the canal and is, presumably, now doing so.
There is bugger-all compo available to anyone for all the lost trade etc. from the disruption - unless you were insured for 'denial of access' - which hit shops and businesses way downstream from Whaley as well as the town itself - all major road and rail links were off because the bridges & viaducts were under threat.
What isn't generally known or even spoken of is that there used to be a reservoir keeper at Toddbrook who lived by the dam and whose job it was to inspect and maintain the dam, rreservoir, run-offs etc. The Canal & River Trust's response to the near-disaster was 'it was OK when we looked at it in November'.
The keeper's cottage fetched £130,000 in 1997. And the savings on his pay must add up to something surely.
We noticed all this because we rely on Whaley for our doctor, dentist, optician, wine shop, favourite restaurant, electrical goods, IT shop, library, best chazza in the Peak, transport hub, enough already.
