John – “how many women have you slept with Mr Assange” – Humphrys is to leave Today this month according to a Guardian gossip columnist who will “miss him hugely”.
“After 32 years, John Humphrys finally leaves Radio 4’s Today later this month. He wants a low-key departure, maybe even simply announcing his on-air farewell at 8.59am one weekday. In fact he may not actually have stepped down now but for his agent and publisher HarperCollins earlier this year forcing his hand so that his memoir, A Day Like Today, could appear in early October. After all, he had signed a contract nearly a decade ago.
Humphrys will not pull his punches in his book – in the same way that he still draws blood on Today. As he did last Tuesday, when skewering the vacillating Keir Starmer. His memoir will cover tussles with Jim Naughtie over the key 8.10am interview, and his pay, always more than any female presenter, including Sue MacGregor, when he joined her on Today in 1987. I will hugely miss Humphrys, who remains, at 76, razor-sharp and terrier-like." -Guardian ------
DaveSayer tweeted in reply: I listened this week to his puffball interview with Rees-Mogg. Two old chums getting the unpleasantness out of the way. Rees-Mogg cleverly fawned over Humphries at the start and that set the tone. Humphries was about as terrier-like as a paving slab after that.
