I'm not actually defending the British Empire on 'moral' grounds, though I can't simply ignore that it existed. It would be just a foolish to ignore the American Empire. Whilst one can argue that it's 'evil', at the same time an awful lot of people want to go there to live and prosper. America's cultural footprint is enormous as well. Vast swathes of people all over the world are following and working like mad to adopt the lifestyle of Americans. That this is a disaster for the planet is another story. There are so many non sequiturs here that "one" doesn't know where "one" should begin. 1. One can argue that it's evil 2. It existed. (Yes, and ... what? It was evil and it existed? I'm with you all the way there, sunshine. No argument from me.) 3. You can't ignore the American empire. 4. You can argue that it's evil. (No its isn't evil, it's in need of psychiatric care. The US (and to a lesser extent the UK) is a basket case crying out for some form of healing therapy). 5. Vast swathes of people all over the world are following and working like mad to adopt the lifestyle of Americans You present this as if it's something positive and desirable to be aspired to and then say That this is a disaster for the planet is another story. No, the "another story" is entirely the point, which you introduce and then summarily dismiss. I don't think there's been another poster here who can face two ways at the same time and is completely oblivious of this glaring dichotomy. On a personal note, dtj, I bear you no ill-will or animosity, but your class blindness is unbridgeable, unfortunately.
