So exactly what is the direct action to deal to global warming? In that global warming is the direct result of human industrial activity on a massive scale, there appears to be a good case that industrial activity such as we now have has to go - but what exactly will replace it? Whether we like or not, and I don't, there are now 7 billion people on this planet who need a house over their head, clean running water, sanitary plumbing, energy to heat their homes and provide for the services societies need, raw materials to provide for even a bare minimum of comfort. This article presents a false dichotomy. Either we change everything or we change nothing. The article's wrong in being so anti wind or solar power. We could literally run the global economy as it is now on just these two technologies. , in fact solar and wind power are not particularly bad for the environment. Certainly the mining of needed materials is, but once constructed or made, wind and sun are free and natural. Wind mills can be recycled and so too can solar panels. The valuable elements in wind mill magnets can be recovered. You can graze stock or plant grain under wind mills, their footprint is tiny. Solar panels take up room, but there are vast expanses of hot, dry, sunny barren land that can accommodate them. The Scientific American published an article in 2004 I think it was, suggesting a then investment of 1/2 trillion dollars would provide enough solar power (concentrating) to provide 80% of the US's electrical power needs. That's now 14 years ago, the opportunities for solar power are almost endless. Now none of this is easy, I recognise this. But the planet could have an advanced and fair economy without going back to the middle ages - it's just we don't seem able to organise ourselves to do this. Having said all this, there are always plenty of cynical opportunists who'll hitch themselves onto any bandwagon if they think they can profit from it. But does that in itself undermine what Greta and so many others are doing? I don't believe it does. Action has to start somewhere. And I wouldn't be too surprised that this 16 yr old girl fully understands all this. She might turn out to be surprisingly incorruptible. Some people are, MLK or Ghando or Mandela could be her model. This has all yet to play out. We don't know what'll happen but supporting Greta and activating at home would be a good first step And, in the face of this climate emergency, we've got to stop breeding, otherwise we've definitely got no hope.
