Sounds like it's you and others who are invested in the 19th century school of blood-based race, nationhood and all that bollocks. In distinction of course the purer platonic identity-theology-psychology-fart based notions of social theorists and religious fundamentalists. A clear analysis of ethnic makeup will find bases in family, clan, symbiosis-with-locality - ie: ethnogeography. Yes of course. But also in religious obserservance (or, non-observing "identity", including fundamentalist athesim) and similar stuff. Family / clan ("blood") links are normal. The point is none of these are necessary. The main background is stereotype of behaviour (to quote L. Gumilev) rooted in the subconscious - ie: you don't choose it, either as a group member or an "outsider" looking in. For example you are clearly to me anyway English, with sub-ethnicity Catholic. You may dispute this but the point is, I can't help it! http://gumilevica.kulichki.net/English/
