Don't blame the messenger - you have a point, Putin did more-or-less immediately call the Ukraine coup for what it was (a coup) and it took time for the Kremlin to start talking to the hostile coup government. I am not saying I know the answer, just that the Kremlin generally doesn't show much support for free-style fleeing champions like Morales and Yanukovich. I recall Putin's comment on Yanukovich, after offering asylum: "His career in politics is over". There may be a tendency towards real politic, but I agree it seems weird they did this so early - at a time when outside support could actually help the coup.
