1) Spain: "For all their faults"? and "They were wrong"? Wrong? The Stalinists destroyed the social revolution. They killed tens of thousands of people who were on their side against Franco. They created a civil war within the civil war. They ensured Franco would win. Stalin was horrified at the possibility of a social revolution. Pretty much as Lenin and Trotsky were before him. 2) Regarding the Irish Civil War and its aftermath. There were no "decent shinners". The shinners, as you put it were led by DeValera, he who said he would "wade through a river of blood" before he would accept the treat (or words to that effect). And then having done just that he forms Fianna Fail which is the party that has pretty much ruled Ireland on behalf of the Brits on and off since. As did Fine Gael when it got its chance.
