I am by no means ‘China hand’. The Falun Gong came up in a conversation I had with Sashimi, during the period of Hong Kong riots, with reference to organ harvesting. I didn’t know anything about either of the subjects. Afterwards, and just by chance, I came by the Greyzone piece, as referenced in my previous post. Noted/filed etc.
Perhaps it was John Pilger’s ‘The coming war on China’ that got me interested at looking for any geopolitical signs of trouble, and thus at any emerging signs of war propaganda in the MSM.
You say:
I’ve come across a fair few reports of horrifying cruelty and violence by the Chinese authorities against members of Falun Gong over the years – do you think these stories are generally true or exaggerated or perhaps completely false?
Sorry. I cannot comment on that, but suggest you read the Greyzone piece to see where they (Falun Gong) are coming from and what possible outcome there may be if they live on the mainland China when they try spreading their message there.
Just an aside, I heard on Radio 4 this eve about the Chinese authorities (I think in Beijing) cracking down on people walking around in their pyjamas on the streets (as one does : )). The beeb reporter breathlessly informed me that the authorities can identify the people from the surveillance cameras and they were ticked-off by the authorities. After an uproar from the people, the next day they apologised … eh?
Dalai Lama. Used to be one of my faves until I read Parenti’s stuff. Currently, there are problems in Tibet methinks, mainly due to Han Chinese moving in after the construction of the railway connecting them to the mainland China. Probably a genuine resentment of the indigenous Tibetans, in addition to the resentment by the priestly class who were ruling the roost to date. This is of course weaponised by our ‘black hats’, keeping the propaganda pot simmering. I’ve visited a number of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim, bordering Tibet, many moons ago, and they are a sight to behold, especially the religious paintings and buildings. Didn’t see any artefacts of torture as mentioned by Parenti and others ; ).
Tiananmen Square. We have had a number of threads on the board on the subject few months ago, and from what I understand, things were not quite what appeared in our MSM. We also know that our intelligence services were not behind the curve and may have dipped their toes into that one. I am sorry but my memory does not serve me well enough to report accurately. But in essence, more complicated than portrayed here in the MSM.
To be fair, due to this distraction about the Chinese prop, I haven’t read enough of this article. After reading further I take my words back! The author is basically uninformed about China, period, and his sources on China are cr*p. The rest is very interesting, both the stuff in the west and elsewhere. For instance:
If we can control machines with our minds, we are approaching a domain in which machines may also control our minds directly or indirectly. It is well established that people change their behavior when they know or believe there is a chance they are being monitored. It follows that people will modulate their thinking patterns and thoughts if they know or expect that government agencies are eavesdropping on their minds.
Chilling. How many years will this take? I think this just may be the toss between the societal/industrial break-down and this Orwellian nightmare. From that perspective, I think Rhis’ and Sashimi’s debate on self-driving cars is a hoot. Still reading and signing out
