Was there this amount of outrage when Prevent was merely harassing Muslims? The XR newsletter doesn't mention the massive injustices that have occurred because of this scheme before they too were caught in its net. Only two MPs brought up concerns about how the Muslim community has been affected, with the majority seeming to accept that Prevent, along with counter-terrorism policing as a whole, was absolutely essential to 'keep us safe' and the bizarre re-framing of how it supposedly 'protects vulnerable people'. Yvette Cooper summed it up:

'The work of the counter-terror police across the country is incredibly important, and they do great work to keep us safe, but that's why this guidance was such a problem, because we cannot afford for confidence in their work to be undermined.' (around 14:30)

Riiiight... Is this just another case of white people raising the drawbridge? XR appear to be safe within the 'castle' for the moment, which is supposed to be a relief. But surely that just makes us part of the problem if we fail to advocate for those still locked outside, or to point out the responsibility that the west's wars, resource extraction and wrecking of the environment have for creating this radicalisation in the first place. Meanwhile the real extreme fundamentalists - the militarists, the capitalists, the earth-destroying industrialists - are all allowed to carry on their merry way, taking the rest of us down with them... Maybe we should start reporting some of them to their own phoney, Orwellian program.
