And @ Gerard. G, old soak, do get it clear: acknowledging that we have a population-overshoot Archived Message

problem doesn't necessarily mean that one has to be a eugenicist. It could be just a case of acknowledging the biological reality when its smacking us in the face. FWIW, I don't happen to think that people should be forcibly restrained from having more than a couple of children. Nor do I think that any category of humans should suffer forced sterilisation; or forced breeding, Third-Reich-style, for that matter. I just think that - obviously - our species has an overshoot problem right now, and if we don't do something humane and just to reduce numbers, then Gaia will do it for us, in her usual horrendous-to-human-sensibilites ways. Also - even if we are forced, red-faced, to retire the climate-shift panic from the list of authentic Synergising Global Crises threatening trouble ahead, there are still plenty of others which seem on track. The overshoot, and the steady depletion of non-renewable resources vital to hitech industrial civilisation, to pick out just two. But I don't believe we have any right to do, nor is there any sense in, fascistically-imposed population-reduction programmes. That's real eugenicism, and I've never had any time for it. I wish you'd get that clear, G. I'm just acknowledging an obvious reality.
