No, I agree with you that it's good he's speaking out now, it is an important message, and you're right to draw attention to the lack of media coverage. I don't know if Lifeboat collectively 'blanked it out' though, let alone for sectarian reasons. McDonnell has been silently complicit in eight years of Assange's torture. Obvious questions arise: e.g. What made him speak up now? Did he suddenly discover that Wikileaks exposed US war crimes and that Assange is being persecuted for this? As Damascene conversions go, this one strikes me as pretty unconvincing. We were all writing to Labour about this for years and getting totally stonewalled. So it looks (to me) like McDonnell made a cynical political calculation, and if people who have been supporting Assange all along aren't convinced by his late-in-the-day expressions of solidarity for the prisoner and concern for a free press, it doesn't mean it's necessarily groupthink or virtue-signalling. But thanks for posting the video, I hadn't seen it when I responded to your last message.
