The mortality rates in young people is a great relief to me. I'm not going to be putting my children at risk. By contrast novel H1N1 Influenza primarily affected the young because older folk had previously been exposed in 1977. The condition ARDS the severest respiratory failure - although triggered by infection (or other severe insult) - is in fact a dysregulation of the immune system. The part which usually fights pathogens gets over up regulated and the supressing part of the immune system gets down regulated. I think sunlight and thus vitamin d is protective - one reason viral respiratory infection is seasonal - though variable evidence that vit d replacement is protective - mainly children. recent trials of vitamin c infusions in icu have not been shown effective though more work proposed.
